So one evening my good friend Elliot rolled up to my house on his new Triumph Daytona 675R motorbike. My Mrs and his Mrs-to-be were both at a Hen party in central London, so we both were free, and since he turned up glad in all his white gear so I decided to shoot a impromptu portrait session.
Lit with a single SB-800 speedlight and my trusty shoot through umbrella on a tripod, we shot these in the street right outside my house. Most of it was stationery, didn’t fancy annoying the neighbors too much with some drive bys, but I was able to give the impression of moment but getting down low and using angles.
I love umbrella shooting, the light falloff wraps around his bike so well and brings out all the details. Through some trickery I was able to knock out most of the ambient light to hide all the ugly background details and really draw focus onto this
Tron poster cool lookin’ outfit. See my behind the scenes shot below to see the setup.
Here’s a shot showing my simple setup, one SB-800 and a shoot through umbrella, dialed down to knock out the ambient light. Fortunately this was a quiet street in Beckenham, so apart from a few residents mistaking my flashes for lightening. The cars obviously picking up the highlights wasn’t a huge deal to retouch out in post, just to isolate him and make the contrast really pop. Overall I’m really pleased with this quick little shoot, just slightly sad I didn’t get to sit on the bike…
